America's No. 2 diplomat to visit Vietnam

U.S. State Department's No.2 official John Negroponte will visit Vietnam for talks later this month, the department said in a statement on Thursday. Negroponte, Deputy Secretary of State, will visit Vietnam after his visit to China and "will have bilateral discussions with his counterparts in the Vietnamese government," the statement said.

The United States had war with Vietnam in the 1960's, killing tens of thousands of people. However, relations between the two countries have been normalized since 1995, and were improved in recent years. U.S. president George W. Bush had a meeting last June with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Minh Triet, the first president from Vietnam to visit the White House since the Vietnam War.
