Swiss leader pledges continued aid to Vietnam

Switzerland prioritizes assistance to Vietnam in education and training and hopes to expand bilateral relations, President Micheline Calmy-Rey said Saturday. She told visiting Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung that Vietnam was among five developing countries Switzerland continued to provide official development assistance.

Dung is in Switzerland for the World Economic Forum World (WEF), held from January 24 to 28 in resort of Davos and attended by top politicians, monetary policymakers, and top business executives. He told the Swiss president he was satisfied with the cooperation between the two countries, particularly in trade and education and training. He conveyed President Nguyen Minh Triet's invitation to her to visit Vietnam. At a meeting the same day with Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Yzipi Livni, Dung said he hoped for continued cooperation in personnel training for Vietnam’s medical, educational, and agricultural sectors. He called for continuing official exchanges at various levels and by business delegations. Livni also hoped for further cooperation with Viet Nam in education, healthcare, and agriculture.

At the WEF, Dung received the CEOs of Citibank, British Petroleum, News Group, Alstom, Technip, and the New York Stock Exchange Group. He said Vietnam was determined to further boost economic development and hoped the corporations would expand their activities in the country. He later met with Vietnamese businesses attending the forum and the Vietnamese community in Switzerland.
