Vietnamese water puppetry acclaimed in Portugal
A water puppetry performance by Vietnamese artists has won acclaim at the 24th annual Almada Festival in Lisbon, Portugal.
This is the first performance by the Vietnam Central Puppetry Theatre in Portugal. The theatre’s director Vuong Duy Bien said at a press briefing in Hanoi yesterday after his Portugal tour that the 12 member group had three performances in Lisbon from July 15 – 17 as part of the Almada Festival. The Lisbon’s 250 seat central cultural house was packed to capacity who went to watch Vietnam’s traditional water puppetry featuring lion dance, dragon dance and boat racing.
According to the theatre’s leader, director of the Almada Festival Joaquin Benite highly appreciated the puppetry performance by Vietnamese artists and expressed his hope that Vietnam would continue to bring its traditional puppetry to the next Almada festival.
The Almada Festival is held annually in Lisbon with various kinds of performing arts such as dance, music and puppetry. This year’s festival drew 23 troupes, including 13 from Portugal and 10 from other countries including France, Colombia, Peru and Vietnam.
Director Bien also said his theatre plans to send troupes to puppetry festivals in Israel in August and in Spain in November.
