North korean PM to visit Vietnam

HANOI - North Korea's prime minister will pay an official visit to Vietnam in late October to boost ties between the two communist countries, state media reported Thursday.

North Korean ambassador Ma Chol Su told Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in a meeting in Hanoi that the purpose of Prime Minister Kim Yong Il's visit includes discussing "measures to promote bilateral ties in all fields with economic relations as the centerpiece," Vietnam Television said. Ma said "developing fine relations with Vietnam is always consistent policy" of North Korean leaders, VTV said. Dung said Vietnam would do everything it can to enhance relations with the North, which is headed by Kim Jong Il.

Vietnam and North Korea, two of few remaining communist countries in the world, have maintained little trade and economic ties. Vietnam established relations with South Korea more than 10 years ago and South Korea has become one of Vietnam's top trading and investment partners.
