Myanmar PM to visit Vietnam this week

HANOI - Myanmar's Prime Minister Thein Sein will pay an official visit to Vietnam from Nov. 9-10, the Press and Information Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Wednesday. Thein Sein is scheduled to hold talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung, and meet with Vietnamese State President Nguyen Minh Triet on Friday.

Dung visited Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar's new capital, in August, during which the enhancement of friendly and cooperative relations between Vietnam and Myanmar, especially in economy, trade and investment were touched upon and a memorandum of understanding on strategic cooperation between the two countries in oil and gas sector was also signed.

The ruling Myanmar State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) on Oct. 24 assigned Lieutenant-General Thein Sein, SPDC first secretary, as new prime minister following the demise of former prime minister Soe Win on Oct. 12. The 62-year-old man has worked for the Myanmar army since 1967. Thein Sein has become the fifth Myanmar's prime minister over the tenure of the SPDC (previously State Law and Order Restoration Council) which took over the power of state on Sept. 18, 1988.
