EC president to visit Vietnam to foster cooperative relations

HANOI - President of the European Commission (EC) Jose Manuel Barroso will pay an official visit to Vietnam on Nov. 25-27 to further develop relations between the country and the European Union (EU), a local spokesman said Thursday. The official visit, the first of a president of the EC since Vietnam and the EU formed diplomatic relations in November 1990, will help strengthen cooperative ties between Vietnam and the EU, especially in the fields of economy, trade and investment, Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Dung said at a regular press briefing.

The visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, will also help the EU as well as the EC better understand Vietnam's socioeconomic situations, its external relations policies and its integration into the world economy, he said. Jose Manuel Barroso is scheduled to hold talks with Dung, and meet with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nong Duc Manh and Vietnamese Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Phu Trong.
