Vietnam authorities find mass grave of communist soldiers

HANOI - Authorities in central Vietnam have found a mass grave containing the remains of communist soldiers killed during the Vietnam War, a government official said Tuesday. Authorities are searching the site, which they believe may contain the remains of several hundred Vietnamese soldiers, Tran Luong Thanh, head of Gio Linh district military command in Quang Tri province.

So far they have found six sets of remains believed to be those of Vietnamese commandos, killed while attacking a military station of the U.S.-backed South Vietnam government near the demilitarized zone that once divided the country between north and south, Thanh said. The remains were discovered after military officials in Quang Tri were tipped off by U.S. and Vietnamese soldiers who fought in the battle there, he said. The remains, none of which were identified, will be buried in a military cemetery later this week. An estimated 58,000 Americans and 3 million Vietnamese were killed in the Vietnam War, which ended in 1975.
