Vietnam, France to expand educational cooperation

France will sign with Vietnam an agreement on educational cooperation next year, focusing on raising the quality of French teaching in Vietnam, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan said. The Deputy PM, who is also the and Minister of Education and Training, said French Minister of Education Xavier Darcos affirmed the attention at their working session in Paris, which was held during Deputy PM Nhan’s visit to France from Oct. 17-20.

The two sides also agreed on principle to organize regular annual meetings of teachers of French, Nhan said. There are currently more than 90,000 students learning French in Vietnam. France has also established two training centers in Vietnam - one in Hanoi and the other in Ho Chi Minh City - to provide Master training courses in English and French. Deputy PM Nhan also met with French Minister of Higher Education and Research Valerie Pecresse, who said her ministry will work out concrete cooperation programs with the aim of training about 1,000 Vietnamese doctors in France within the next 13 years.

During his working visit to France, Deputy PM Nhan attended the 34th general assembly of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), an educational ministers’ round-table meeting.
