Vietnam needs 500,000 company chiefs by 2010, says expert

Vietnam needs 500,000 Chief Executive Officers by 2010, Vu Thi Hang, vice chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry in HCMC, has estimated. Lao Dong newspaper quoted her as saying that the government, businesses, and young people had to make a concerted effort to ensure they were churned out. The government should provide high quality education, invite well-known corporate leaders to train budding CEOs, and send talented people to study abroad, she said.

Enterprises should have vision, sacrifice short-term benefits to obtain long-term ones, and stop looking for workers who can immediately meet their needs and don’t require further training, she said. However, to have good CEOs the government must ensure they worked in conditions that allowed them to realize their potential, she said. With the country unable to attract foreign talent because of the poor working conditions, most of the CEOs would have to be home-grown, she pointed out. She warned that with 2010 not being too far away, producing 500,000 CEOs would be no easy task: It was time for the government and businesses to join hands.
