Australian company plans to build US$4 billion power plant in Vietnam

HANOI - Australian coal mining company Ensham Resources Pty Ltd. plans to build a US$4-billion coal-fired power plant in southern Vietnam, state media and Vietnamese officials said Tuesday. Authorities recently approved the proposal from Ensham, which wants to build a 3,600-megawatt power plant in the southern Mekong Delta province, said Phung Huu Tiem, provincial investment official.

If approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, construction will begin in 2008 and be completed in 2012, Vietnam News Agency reported. The plant will be built in Kien Giang, 240 kilometres southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Local officials have agreed to expand the province's central port so that it can accommodate the 60,000-ton ships needed to carry coal to the plant, which will be solely owned by Ensham. Vietnam's electricity consumption has increased an average of 17 per cent annually in recent years. The country's power supply has been struggling to keep pace with the demands of its booming economy.
