PM Dung interacts with citizens

HANOI - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will today spend two and a half hours talking online with the public for the first time. The event, which has attracted the attention of the public and the media both inside and outside the country, is being jointly organised by the online newspaper of the Viet Nam Communist Party, the Government website, Viet Nam Television and the online VietnamNet e-paper. The organisers said that they had received nearly 16,000 questions.

According to the organisers, the PM would answer some 113 questions selected by them while the rest would be answered later because of the time limit. Other than the public, the online dialogue has attracted the attention of the global media, including news agencies such as the BBC and AFP. The event shows the attractive desire of the country's leaders to interact with the people and engage them in a constructive way for the country's development.

Today's chat follows various other online events organised by various ministries, agencies and media over the last year on specific topics of public concern, which has yielded impressive results in terms of discussions and garnering public opinion. While the Prime Minister's online dialogue today may gladden those whose questions have been selected, more importantly, the citizen gets to witness the actual process of a leader and his government who promised to build a just, democratic and civilised society, leading the country.

At the macro level, increasing people's participation would raise the prestige of Viet Nam, both the country and its leaders, among the international community. This would mean further support from the international community, which is still required by a developing country like Viet Nam for building a prosperous and strong nation.
