Vietnam's first WiMAX service to be tested in October

A pilot project to provide WiMAX broadband wireless technology access service - the first in Vietnam - will start in northern Lao Cai province in October, according to Intel Vietnam. The project, jointly carried out by Intel, the Vietnam Data Communication Company (VDC) of the Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT), the US Agency for International Development (USAID), will provide Internet and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services to people in the province.

A base station and nearly 20 hot spots will be installed in many places in Lao Cai province such as schools, clinics, post offices, Internet cafes, hotels, and offices. Vu Hoang Lien, VDC Director, said the success of the project would help VNPT to get a licence for the WiMAX service, which is ideal for rural, remote and mountainous areas in Vietnam, where telecom infrastructure has not yet developed.
