Vietnam welcomes Asian nations supporting of UNSC nomination

Vietnam welcomes the unanimous decision of the Asian group in the United Nations which endorsed Vietnam to be the only candidate of the continent for the post of UN Security Council (UNSC) non-permanent member in 2008-2009 term, said a Vietnamese spokesperson.

The decision has demonstrated the acknowledgment of and appreciation of the Asian group for contributions and the role of Vietnam in UN activities, local newspaper Vietnam News on Tuesday quoted the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry Le Dung as saying. Since its membership in 1977, Vietnam has shown strong commitment to the UN Charter's principles and goals, strictly implemented the duties and responsibilities of a member country, and made active contributions to the activities of this biggest international organization, he said. "Becoming a UN Security Council non-permanent member in the term will help Vietnam further contribute to the UN process of keeping and promoting peace and security all over the world," Dung said.

The group agreed on Oct. 27 to nominate Vietnam as the only candidate for a non-permanent member in council in the term. Candidates must gain at least two-third supports in the 192-nation UN General Assembly to win a seat in the council.
