12 miners rescued from collapsed tunnel in northern Vietnam, two missing
HANOI - Rescue teams have reached 12 miners trapped inside a collapsed tunnel in northern Vietnam, but two others are still missing, mining officials said Sunday.
Six miners were removed unharmed from the 100-metre tunnel in Cam Pha District late Saturday night and six others were rescued early Sunday morning.
The region, some 200 kilometres northeast of Hanoi, is Vietnam's main coal-mining region.
The miners became trapped on Friday when they struck a pocket of water that collapsed parts of the tunnel. Five miners were rescued earlier, with one suffering from minor injuries.
Last month, eight miners were killed in a tunnel explosion in Cam Pha District after miners apparently hit a pocket of methane gas.
