Vietnam top government leaders ask to resign

HANOI - Vietnam's three top government leaders have asked the national assembly to accept their resignations, kicking off a leadership reshuffle in the communist nation, an official said. "Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, President Tran Duc Luong and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An one by one read their resignation letters to the assembly," said an official from the legislature's information centre.

The 496 deputies of the assembly, which convenes behind closed doors, then split into working groups to discuss the letters ahead of an official vote Saturday or Monday, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. "After the resignations are accepted, it will probably take a day before the assembly can approve new government and state leaders," the official told AFP. "Until then, the standing deputies will take charge."
