Vietnam Airlines staffer arrested for taking bribes

HANOI - Police have arrested two people including a Vietnam Airlines employee on suspicion of taking bribes from a job-seeker, the national carrier said. A medical worker in the company and a Hanoi female resident "were arrested by the city's investigative police for suspected involvement in the fraud," airline spokesman Nguyen Tan Chan said in a statement. The candidate, who was turned down by the company for a steward's job, had written to police complaining he had paid 20,000 dollars to secure the post.

According to state media, the woman has told police that part of the money she received was redistributed to some airline recruitment officials. Vietnam Airlines' deputy director general Nguyen Thanh Trung, in charge of recruitment, was quoted as saying the case was just "negative phenomena in the society that has nothing to do with the company's recruitment process." It is the second time in two weeks an employee from the state-owned company has been detained. A pilot is being held in Australia after his arrest on June 3 at Sydney international airport with a suitcase full of hundreds of thousands of dollars, allegedly in connection with a transnational drug trafficking ring.
