Vietnam rejects operators' bid to setup 3G networks

Vietnam’s Ministry of Posts and Telecom (MPT) has disallowed Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and the Vietnam Military Telecom (Viettel) from setting up 3G networks because of legal concerns, the agency said. The ministry said that it rejected the license applications because it is still considering regulations for 3G. The ministry however declined to give more details on its decision.

Le Dang Dung, deputy general director of Viettel, said, Viettel is ready to upgrade to 3G networks to meet the booming market demand and it is time to develop 3G networks in Vietnam Vietnam now has more than 11 million mobile phone subscribers served by four service providers including of VNPT units VinaPhone and MobiFone networks, Viettel, S-Telecom, and EVN Telecom. VNTP has more than seven million subscribers and Viettel has more than three million clients
