ADB, France fund north Vietnam railway upgrade

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and France will provide funds to improve a rail route between Hanoi and Lao Cai on the China border under a regional rail link project. The project is expected to cost US$140 million of which the ADB will lend $60 million and France the rest. The project will be undertaken under the aegis of the Greater Mekong Sub-region initiative comprising Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand.

In 1992, with the ADB's assistance, the six countries set up a framework of sub-regional cooperation to boost economic relations among the countries. It has contributed to the development of infrastructure to enable development and sharing of their resource base and promote the freer flow of goods and people within the region. It has also led to international recognition of the sub-region as a growth area.
