Vietnam to open rail route to China

Vietnam’s railways plans to begin a service between Hanoi and Nanning, the capital of China’s Guangxi province. There would be two trains a week in either direction with a capacity of around 200 passengers, Vu Kim Ngan, director of Dong Dang railway station in the northern Vietnamese Lang Son province, said.

The new route was aimed at increasing the number of tourists and businesspeople travelling across the Dong Dang border, Ngan said, adding that Vietnamese visitors were fond of shopping in Nanning while Chinese businesspeople visited Vietnam for both tourism and business purposes. China had previously run a rail service from Guilin, another Guangxi province town, to Ha Long in Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province. It was closed down in 2003 due to the SARS epidemic.
