Vietnam to host regional petanque championship
Some 171 players from 13 teams, including 11 foreign squads are set to participate in the 10th Asian Petanque Championships slated for October 26-30 in Hanoi.
The players will compete in seven events, including men's and women's doubles, men's and women's trios, mixed doubles, and the men's and women's shooting categories, said organizers Monday.
This is the second time Vietnam is to host such a tournament after the first event in December 2004 in Ho Chi Minh City.
At the 8th edition in 2004, the Vietnamese women’s team claimed silver after losing 15-4 to Thailand in the final game.
In March 2005 at the Asia-Pacific Petanque Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnamese men’s team from Binh Thuan province clinched a gold medal in the team event.
Petanque is an outdoor bowling game – also known as boules – which has its origins in France, where a heavy set of metal balls is tossed to the playing area backhand.
