Vietnam to participate in UN peacekeeping activities
HANOI - Vietnam, once becoming a member of the United Nations Security Council, will do its utmost to join hands in sharing UN responsibilities for maintaining international peace and security, Vietnam News Agency on Friday quoted a local official as saying.
Participating in the council, Vietnam, together with countries having important roles in the world, will work out and implement the organ's regulations on politics and security, said Deputy Foreign Minister Le Van Bang.
"Through activities of the United Nations Security Council, we(Vietnam) will make indirect contribution to maintaining stability and security and ensuring Vietnam's benefits," he said, noting that becoming the council's member will also help the nation improve its image in international arena and foster relations with other countries.
Vietnam, which is running for non-permanent membership of the council for the 2008-2009 term, has received support from members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and some other countries, including those playing important roles in the region and the world, Bang said.
The council is the most powerful UN organ, whose decisions are legally binding all UN member states.
