Miss Vietnam enters final round tonight

The most beautiful girl in Vietnam will be crowned from 34 beauties at the Miss Vietnam beauty contest 2006 August 26 on the resort island of Hon Tre, broadcast live on Vietnam Television tonight, August 26.

In a break from tradition, ten contestants will make it through to the finals after the initial awards are announced, following the protocols of the Miss Universe pageant. The ten will move on to the ao dai (Vietnamese traditional tunic dress), swim suit and evening dress competitions to the final five, who will advance to the question and answer session.

Miss 1998 Ngoc Khanh and the VTV3 channel’s hot boy Anh Tuan will warm up the stage as the contest’s MCs. Spectators will get a chance to see 10 years of Miss Vietnams, as they reunite to sing “Loi Trai Tim Muon Noi” (Words from my heart) in performance at event. Famous artists My Tam, Quang Dung, Kasim Hoang Vu, Thu Minh, AC&M, and Red Sun are set to perform at Miss Vietnam 2006.

The contest takes place on a brand new water-music stage at the VinPearl resort’s Hon Ngoc Viet (Cultural Park) – the first-ever international 5-star resort in Van Phong Bay, just off the coast of Nha Trang resort city in Khanh Hoa province. The modern stage and seating area holds 5,000 people, and was opened to the public Thursday morning. Ticket prices are VND 500,000 (US$31.2) and VND 200,000 (US$12.5), but if you haven’t got your tickets yet it’s too late, as the event has been sold out.

Mai Phuong Thuy crowns Miss Vietnam

A Hanoian, Mai Phuong Thuy, 18, a freshman of Hanoi Foreign Trade University, was named Miss Vietnam 2006 in the pageant final last Saturday at the Vinpearl Resort in the central coastal city of Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa province. Thuy, 1.79 m tall, was the tallest competitor in the Miss Vietnam history. She weights 60kg and has measurements of 86-65-95. Thuy also won the audience’s choice prize through votes via SMS and the Internet poll.

As Miss Vietnam 2006, Thuy will be awarded VND 80 million (US $5,000) and will travel to Japan before taking part in the Miss World competition in Poland next month. The first runner-up in Saturday’s pageant was Luu Bao Anh, 24, from Can Tho province. She is now a student of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities of Ho Chi Minh City. The second runner-up was Luong Thi Ngoc Lan, 21, from Ho Chi Minh City. She is a student of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology. They receive prizes of VND 40 million (US $2,500) and VND 30 million (1,900), respectively.

Other prizes were presented to Miss Photogenic Cao Thanh Hang from Hanoi; Miss Swimsuit Hoang Le Trang from Khanh Hoa; Miss Sport Dam Thi Ly from Dak Lak, and Miss Friendship K’ The from Lam Dong. Each will receive cash and Shiseido cosmetics valued at VND 5 million (US $300). The Miss Vietnam contest, formerly Miss Tien Phong, was launched 16 years ago by the newspaper. The organising board presented VND 100 million to the gratitude fund of Khanh Hoa province, and VND 100 million to a fund for supporting war veterans.
