French doctor trades stethoscope for saxophone at Miracle Night

A director of the Franco-Vietnam (FV) Hospital will perform together with a famous Vietnamese saxophonist at a concert in Ho Chi Minh City Saturday to raise funds for disadvantage children. Jean Francois Biset, FV Hospital medical director, will take the Lan Anh stage in District 10 along with Tran Manh Tuan, Vietnam’s leading saxophonist at the Dem Huyen Dieu (Miracle Night) concert due to start at 8pm.

The concert is aimed to raise funds for the newly-established Children of Vietnam Charitable Fund, namely Nang Buoc Tuoi Tho (supporting children) Fund. The fund, founded by doctor Duong Quang Trung, FV Hospital, and Thanh Nien newspaper, officially made its debut in HCMC on Wednesday. Talking with Thanh Nien ahead of the concert, Biset said the new charitable fund would be an important step to promote charity programs of not only FV Hospital in Vietnam.

The doctor said he performed with Tuan for the first time at the FV Hospital inaugural ceremony in 2003. “The combination of the Western saxophone and Vietnamese instruments like the flute, dan tranh (16-chord zither), and dan bau (monochord) is non-verbal communication between the two cultures,” he said. Tickets for the Dem Huyen Dieu concert cost VND120,000-250,000 (US$7.5-15.6) and are available at Lan Anh Club, 291 Cach Mang Thang Tam Street, District 10, FV Hospital, 6 Nguyen Luong Bang Street, District 7, and Thanh Nien newspaper, 248 Cong Quynh Street, District 1.
