Labour market 2006 : managers wanted

Human resource service providers believe that business, IT and financial services will have the highest demand for staff recruitment in 2006.

Business number one

In general, the sectors that saw high demand for staff recruitment in 2005 will see further increased demand in this year. Demand will especially increase in business, by 41-50%. The positions most needed would be senior experts, managers and company section heads. According to human resource service providers, recruiters are setting higher and higher requirements for candidates. Tam Thanh Thien Trang, Deputy Director of NetViet, said that the demand for trademark directors increased dramatically in 2005 as a result of increased foreign investment. In addition, enterprises have been more aware of the importance of the position.

Accountants, personnel administrators second

HR Vietnam reported a 37% increase in demand for personnel officers and applications for the post are on the rise. Demand for staff in telecommunications has increased by 33% and has doubled for financial services, though the number of candidates remains modest. Candidates applying for accountant and administrator/secretary have been increasing as well, and there are few opportunities left, according to Paul Nguyen, Director of HR Vietnam.

Demand for IT officers always high

Nguyen Thi Hai Ha, Head of Marketing Section of VietNamworks.com, said that fast growth in telecommunications would keep demand for IT officers high in the future. The most noteworthy point is the appearance of the qualified technical manager, according to Nguyen Thi Kha Ai from Navigos Group. Over the past two years, the post of factory manager has been filled more and more by Vietnamese, while several years ago such qualified staff could not be found. HR Vietnam has announced findings on the labour market that the demand for advertising and public relations officers has decreased by 7% compared to the previous year. Yet enterprises are also increasingly in demand of staff that can hold more important positions with higher responsibilities The consumer production sector, favoured for several years, has also seen demand decrease by 27% and customer service by 25%, while candidates have decreased by 1% only.

High demand, low supply

Over the past few years, the quality of labourers has gradually improved, according to Huynh Van Thoi from HR Vietnam. Mr Thoi said that candidates have more opportunities now to learn from foreign experts. In addition, a large number of young people returning to work in Vietnam after a study abroad could be considered qualified candidates thanks to their international experience. Ms Kha Ai from Navigos Group shared the same view, but said that quality improvement was not enough to meet the increasingly high demand in the market. “Recruiters set up higher requirements on the candidates, especially in business and financial sectors,” she said.
