Vietnam businesses fail to harness IT

Over 97 percent of domestic enterprises have yet to make optimum use of information technology, hampering the introduction of e-commerce, Vietnam’s main business association told a meeting Thursday. The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) said a survey it made revealed most businesses focused heavily on hardware but very little on software and IT staff training.

They spent 60 percent of their capital on hardware and a mere 11.7 percent and 4.8 percent on software and training respectively. Over 40 percent of them did not have qualified IT staff and over 70 percent were yet to launch their own websites, the survey found. Less than 4 percent made use of IT consulting services.

Speaking at the meeting, Than Trong Phuc, CEO of chipmaker Intel Vietnam, said his company planned to hold a contest next month to promote IT application among businesses. It would also offer assistance to local companies in using IT applications, he said.
