Vietnam to build int'l airport on northern island
Vietnam will build an international airport in Van Don Island in the northern province of Quang Ninh after 2010, a local official said Wednesday.
The airport will be capable of annually serving 500,000-800,000 passengers in the first phase, and 3-3.5 million passengers in the second between 2016 and 2020, said Nguyen Duy Hung, vice chairman of the provincial People's Committee.
"We plan to complete the airport's design in 2010, then work out concrete schemes for the construction," he said, noting that capital is expected to come from the state budget and local investors.
The airport is part of a plan on developing the Van Don economic zone in Quang Ninh, which was approved by the government recently.
The plan aimed to develop Van Don into a major ecotourism resort by upgrading a domestic seaport in the island and build a highway linking Hanoi capital with the province's Mong Cai town, Hung said.

Southern Vietnam to get new international airport by 2008
Work is on to upgrade Can Tho airport with the Vietnamese government hoping to make in an international destination by 2008.
Its runway and taxiways will be expanded to serve mid and long-range aircraft on domestic and international routes.
A modern terminal is also under construction at a cost of VND370 billion (US$23.2 million).
The upgrade work has been underway for nine months and about 10 percent of the work has been completed.
The only international airport in the south, Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat airport, is located in a densely populated area and is plagued by overloading and congestion.
