Miss Vietnam contest takes on a new face

For the first time in its 18 year history, Miss Vietnam 2006 is to be organized in accordance with the Miss World contest protocol, announced contest organizers. Organizer of the biannual event – Tien Phong (Pioneer) newspaper – said the August 15-26 contest has drawn some 3000 entrants, 10 of which are overseas Vietnamese.

Besides the winner, the first and second runners-up, this year’s contest will have five additional prizes: Miss Photogenic, Miss Ocean, Miss Sport, Miss Friendly and Miss Voted Online. Unlike previous years, the 2006 pageant’s final stage will have four rounds instead of one. In the final round, only ten beauties will be chosen instead of 40. The winner pockets VND80 million (US$5,000) and a holiday abroad. First and second runners-up will get gifts worth VND40 million ($2,500) and VND30 million ($1,900). Part of the money from ticket sales, about more than VND200 million (US$12,000), will be donated to Volunteer Youth Force fund and the Khanh Hoa province’s Charity Fund, among other good causes.

The final round will take place at the VinPearl Resort and Spa on Hon Tre Island, off the coast of Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa Province.
