Russia, Vietnam to work on energy

HANOI - Russia will submit a bid for the construction of power stations in Vietnam, Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov announced in Hanoi Thursday. The announcement followed talks with his Vietnamese counterpart, Phan Van Khai, ITAR-TASS reported. "Apart from the oil and gas sphere, in which the level of cooperation is already high, we would like to participate in a tender for the construction of the Son La hydropower plant," Fradkov said.

Cooperation between Russia and Vietnam looks set to expand in the future. Already planning to supply $2.4 billion generators for a hydropower project, there is also talk of Russian involvement in the construction of Vietnam's first nuclear power plant. And according to ITAR-TASS reports, the two countries are also interested in joint ventures in machine-building, high technologies and space projects. In the more immediate future, however, oil experts from the two countries are to begin consultations on Vietsovpetro, a joint oil agreement. The current Vietsovpetro agreement expires in 2010, but Russia is keen to extend it.

Trade turnover between RF, Vietnam can be tripled

HANOI - The trade turnover between Russia and Vietman may exceed four billon dollars in the coming years, Prime Ministers Mikhail Fradkov of Russia said at a meeting with Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Nguyen Van An. According to Mikhail Fradkov, in 2005, the Russian-Vietnamese trade turnover exceeded one billion dollars, the economic news agency PRME-TASS reports. “Our estimate is far from being a limit: in the coming years we can increase the trade turnover three-fold,” Fradkov said. “It is necessary to solve these ambitious tasks by joint efforts,” he added.

The present stage of Russian-Vietnamese relations, as the Russian head of government believes, is characterized by stability, good prospects and a great potential which can be put into life in the near future. He added that with every passing year conditions of Russian-Vietnamese business become ever more favourable. According to him, it is a consequence of the reforms underway both in Russia and Vietnam which creates extra possibilities for development of cooperation. Mikhail Fradkov also stated that Russia considers Vietnam as its strategic partner in the Asian-Pacific region. The declaration on strategic partnership signed in 2001, as he stressed, “has been tested by time and the Russian side intends to strictly abide by these agreements.”
