Cambodia, Vietnam to commence land transportation along border on Saturday

Cambodia and Vietnam would officially start to transport goods and passengers by vehicles between the two countries on Sept. 30, 2006, the Cambodian News Agency said on Friday. For the start, both sides plan to directly transport goods with 20 trucks and passengers with 20 buses through the Baveth-Mocbai border crossing on Saturday, the agency quoted Eung Chunhuor, senior official at the Ministry of Transport and Public Works.

Cambodia and Vietnam are scheduled to increase the number of vehicles and buses that will pass through more crossings along their border to meet the increasing demands of the two countries, he added. Cambodia and Vietnam on Wednesday kicked off their joint operation to install markers to precisely define their 1,270 km- long land border. Both sides plan to set up 353 border markers, and the work is expected to be finished in 2008. The Cambodian-Vietnamese border was closed for years due to lack of markers and other problems of bilateral ties. Transportation across the border was conducted privately and not recognized by the government.
