Warner Bros to open cinemas in Vietnam

HANOI - US film studio Warner Bros International Cinemas and HCM City-based film company Thien Ngan (Galaxy) have announced plans to build and run several multiplex cinemas in Vietnam. Millard Ochs, Warner Bros president, said Vietnam, with its population of 80 million people, was a promising market.

"This is in line with out overall business plan to expand the movie-going audience in underserved markets," he said. Ochs said he and his staff visited Ho Chi Minh City last month to survey the local market and discovered that the privately owned Thien Ngan shared its commitment to excellence. "Warner Bros is our first foreign partner in such a project. We hope this will provide local moviegoers with high quality entertainment," Phan To Hong Hai, Thien Ngan's marketing manager, said.

Hai could not give an exact date for the opening of the first cinema but said it would open in the near future. Thien Ngan plans to spend VND20 billion (US$1.25 million) over the long-term on cinemas and films, having already built the three-screen Galaxy cinema.
