Vietnam minister questioned over betting scandal
HANOI - Vietnam’s minister of transport has been asked to explain his role in a scam in which tens of millions dollars of state funds were spent on illegal football gambling, an official said on Tuesday. Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has asked minister Dao Dinh Binh to submit the results of his self-criticism “before March 15”, an official from the government’s office told AFP.
According to the daily army newspaper Quan Doi Nhan Dan, the decision was made last week after Khai was told a police investigative report on the illegal betting ring had uncovered the involvement of several state officials. In January, police arrested Bui Tien Dung, a director general at the ministry, over allegations that he spent millions of dollars of state funds on bets on top English and Spanish league matches. State media said the official had bet $1.8 million in December alone.
