French author epitomized in Vietnam stage show

A play, adapted from the famous novel A Dam Against the Pacific (Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique) by Marguerite Duras, will be staged in Ho Chi Minh City Wednesday to commemorate the world-renowned French writer. Twenty-four-year-old actress Maud Andrieux plays the starring role, based on Duras’ autobiographical 1950 novel in a play held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of her death.

The story is set in Indochina in the 1930s, as a French woman tried to build a dam against the Pacific to reclaim the soil and sea encroachment on farm land. Speaking with Tuoi Tre Monday, Maud Andrieux said she arrived in Vietnam in 2003 and began to read Duras’ works after Vietnamese friends introduced her to the French writer. The young director revealed she intended to produce a film based on the novel A Dam Against the Pacific but without investment, she turned it into a play that has received rave reviews from audiences in France and other European countries.

The play is part of activities held during the Francophone International Month at the Institute for Cultural Exchange with France, or Idecaf, in March. The agenda includes “Marguerite Duras in Trouville” photo exhibition from March 20 to April 1, the "Learning about United French online" contest from March 20 to 29 and the Marka concert on March 24. On March 23, Nguyen Xuan Tu Huyen will preside over a seminar themed “Marguerite Duras in Vietnam” focusing on the French author relation with Vietnam, where she spent her childhood and the source of inspiration for her famous novel, L’Amant (The Lover).
