Vietnam ATMs fail to debit withdrawals, bank in denial

Four people withdrew cash from automatic teller machines (ATMs) run by Vietcombank last week which they said has not been debited to their accounts. But the bank said there was no glitch in the system. Vietnamese bank cardholders said they had been able to withdraw over US$3,750 in cash without being debited, while the ATM operator rejected any technical errors.

The four, who have bank accounts with the Vietnam International Commercial Joint Stock Bank (VIB) told Thanh Nien they had withdrawn over VND60 million (US$3,750) last Sunday but their accounts showed the same balances after the withdrawal. The also said VIB officials had met them to claim the money. However, Nguyen Chien Thang from the ATM department of the Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam – as Vietcombank is officially known – said “VIB has not registered any such case”. He also said there had been no fault in the ATM network. Another Vietcombank official also told Thanh Nien there had been no technical errors in the ATM system last Sunday and blamed the problem on VIB. He said any demand through the ATMs must first be processed by VIB. If the bank agreed, the ATMs would process the orders.
