Second hydro plant in Vietnam to be equipped with Russian turbines

HANOI - A second hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in Vietnam will be equipped with Russian turbines, a spokesman for a major Russian manufacturer said Wednesday. The spokesman for Silovye Mashiny, Russia's leading manufacturer of energy equipment for power plants, said the $40-million contract on supplies of Russian equipment for the A Vuong HPP, which is under construction in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Nam had been signed Tuesday in the city of Da Nang. Silovye Mashiny is working the project in cooperation with a Japanese company, Sumitomo, which was selected as the equipment contractor for the HPP. The spokesman said interaction with Japanese companies opened up new prospects for further cooperation.

The construction of the A Vuong HPP began in August 2003 and is scheduled to finish in 2008. The total power output of the two hydro turbines is 210 megawatts and the plant is designed to produce up to 815 million kilowatts a year. Electricity of Vietnam, the national generator, has put the cost of the project at $240 million with 25% of financing coming from loans extended by the Japanese government. Silovye Mashiny, as a sub-contractor in cooperation with two of Japan's leading companies, Mitsubishi and Sumitomo, had previously signed a contract to supply the Buon Kuop HPP in Vietnam with 140-megawatt hydropower turbines.
