Transformation boosts Vietnam's rice industry

HANOI - Vietnam's rice exports rose 30.6 percent in 2004 to 4.05 million tons worth $941 million (R5.3 billion), the General Statistics Office said Tuesday. Vietnam has forecast it will export some four million tons of rice in 2005 out of annual output of 36 million tons. The Ministry of Agriculture said Monday that Vietnam had signed last week contracts to export some 500 000 tons of rice, most of which will go to the Philippines, the Middle East and South Africa.

In 2003, Vietnam regained its status as the world's second-largest exporter of rice after Thailand after earlier slipping behind India. Vietnam's rice industry has undergone a major transformation in the past decade, turning the country into a major exporter from the net importer in was before 1989.
