Central Vietnam tunnel toll-free for first month

Southeast Asia’s longest tunnel in central Vietnam will open to traffic June 5 and collect no tolls in its first month. Drivers can go through the tunnel under Hai Van Pass between Danang city and Thua Thien-Hue province as many times without paying a toll for the month of June, said deputy director of the project management unit Nguyen Thanh Tra.Fire brigades and health care and police forces from the two localities will conduct rescue drills on May 20.

The 12-km tunnel is among the 30 longest and most modern tunnels in the world. Construction of the project started in April 2001 with investment totaling at some 150 million USD. The main tunnel is 11.9 meters wide. Another tunnel running parallel is reserved for maintenance and emergencies. The emergency tunnel is scheduled for expansion in 2010 to meet the increase of traffic.
