Thai AirAsia launches Vietnam service

HANOI - Thai AirAsia budget airline has launched its Vietnam service to boost travel between the two countries, an executive said Tuesday. Starting Monday, the Thailand-based airline planned to offer seven flights a week between Bangkok and Hanoi, said Bui Duc Hanh, the airline's chief representative in Vietnam.

"Our occupancy rate was 70 percent in the first two days of operation. It was promising," he said. "We are not going to take customers from traditional airlines, but we will attract low-budgeted travelers to fly with us." The fare ranges from US$25 (euro21) to US$99 (euro82) one way. Hanh said the airline hopes to expand its service to southern commercial center of Ho Chi Minh City in the near future and hopes to boost travel between the two countries.

Thai AirAsia was the second low-cost airlines to offer service to the communist country. Singapore-based Tiger Airways began flights from Singapore to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in April.
