Vietnamese people interested in russian language

HANOI - On Wednesday Hanoi hosted a roundtable on the Russian language teaching and studies in Vietnam. Those attending were officials of the Russian Science and Culture Center in Hanoi, local Russian language teachers and representatives of some educational and public organizations.

The Russian language center was opened in the Russian Science and Culture Center in Hanoi in the beginning of 2005. It will be implementing a number of educational, training and cultural Russian language programs. According to center's director Natalia Karapetyan, the elaboration of a target program of the Russian language distribution across Vietnam will be a key task of the center. In particular, Russian and Vietnamese teachers are to organize regular Russian language classes, hold certification examinations and other events to promote Russian.

The roundtable participants also focused on the plan to restore the Russian language classes on televisions, which had been held regularly since 1989 and were suspended a year ago in connection with the lack of a modern training program. According to the data of the Education Ministry, the Russian language is currently being taught in a number of secondary schools in Vietnam and in ten higher education establishments, including state universities, state teachers' training, polytechnic and foreign trade institutes in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and other cities.

A branch of the Alexander Pushkin Russian Language Institute (one of the institute's two foreign branches) has been functioning in Hanoi since 1983. Since 1990 it is financed by the Vietnamese side.
