Vietnamese-Russian JV builds 325 mln dlr gas pipeline in southern Vietnam

HANOI - Vietsovpetro, a Vietnam-Russia joint-venture linked to the country's oil and gas giant PetroVietnam has started construction of a 325 million dollar offshore gas pipeline. "The 332-kilometer pipeline will link the PM3-CAA gas field with the Phu My gas factory", a PetroVietnam official, who declined to be named, told AFP. "We expect the construction will end on October 30 next year," he said.

The Phu My 3 power plant, in the southern coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, south of Ho Chi Minh City, has been built and owned by British energy giant BP and other foreign investors. It officially came on line in early 2004. The plant has a design capacity of 716.8 megawatts and has added almost 10 percent of Vietnam's power generation capacity to the national grid, according to official figures. Vietnam's electricity demand has risen on average by 13-15 percent annually in recent years creating an urgent need for more infrastructure development. According to government estimates, about 70-80 billion kilowatts of power will be needed in 2010, with the figure increasing to between 160 and 200 billion kilowatts by 2020.
