French-led consortium launches 700-Megawatt power plant in Vietnam
HANOI- A French-led consortium officially launched on Friday a 715-megawatt power plant in southern Vietnam that will produce eight percent of the country's electricity needs, it said in a statement.
The Phu My 2-2 power plant is located in Ba Ria Vung Tau, close to the gas offshore production sites and to the country's economic hub Ho Chi Minh City.
It has been developed by Mekong Energy Co Ltd (MECO), grouping French Electricit‚ de France (EDF) with 56 percent, Japanese Sumitomo Corp holds 28 percent and Japanese company TEPCO has 15 percent.
The Phu My 2-2 Power Plant cost a total of 480 US dollars. MECO will run the complex for the next 20 years.
Electricity demand in Vietnam is expected to rise an average 15 percent annually until 2010, creating an urgent need for further infrastructure development.
