Vietnam and Indonesia sign agreements during presidential visit

HANOI - Vietnam and Indonesia signed a memorandum of understanding on education and security during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's official visit to Vietnam on Monday. The two leaders expressed wishes that cooperation between the two countries on a range of different issues be ramped up.

"In the political realm we agreed we would enhance political and diplomatic communication," Susilo told reporters at a press briefing following the signing of three bilateral agreements. Economic, defense and security ties were also discussed in the meeting between the two presidents, Susilo said. "We agreed on the need to hold high-level consultations between Vietnam and Indonesia. The president and I agreed to assign government agencies to work closely together," Vietnam's President Tran Duc Luong said at the press conference.

After arriving late Saturday, the Indonesian president is expected to hold talks on Monday with Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, Chairman of the Vietnam Communist Party Nong Duc Manh and chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Van An. Susilo's visit ends today, when he is expected to fly on to Japan.
