Vietnam poised to raise minimum salaries at foreign firms

A proposal by the Vietnamese government to raise base monthly wages at foreign-invested companies has won support. At a seminar Friday, foreign-invested companies agreed with the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs’ plan to raise minimum salaries by a uniform US$10 per month in all centers. The proposed minimum wages are US$55 in major economic centers like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, and Binh Duong; $50 in Hai Phong, Ha Long, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Vung Tau, and Can Tho; and US$45 in other cities and provinces.

The current levels, which had been set six years ago, were no longer appropriate, head of the ministry’s Salaries Department, Pham Minh Huan, said. He said the increase was a critical step in achieving a uniform level of base wages across sectors. The government announced last week a hike in base salaries at state-owned enterprises and agencies by 20.7% to $22 per month.
