Four rail officials to be axed over Vietnam’s worst train crash

Four high-ranking officials of the railway company which operates the country’s express train services are to be sacked after the worst train crash in 30 years occurred in mid-March and killed 11 passengers. Pham Van Truong, deputy director of the Hanoi Locomotive Company (HLC), along with three company officials, Luu Quang Khai, Pham Van Nghiem and Nguyen Trong Hoi, will be fired, said Nguyen Huu Bang, chief executive of Vietnam Railway, recently. Vietnam Railway is also to reprimand HLC Director Vu Van Doa, Mr. Bang said. HLC is a subsidiary of Vietnam Railway.

On March 12, a north-south express train derailed in central Thua Thien-Hue province, 650 kilometers south of Hanoi, killing 11 passengers on board and injuring 76 others in the country’s worst rail accident. The train’s black box showed it was traveling somewhere between 60 to 69 kilometers an hour when it crashed. The speed limit for the area where the train crashed is 40 kilometers an hour.
