Cambodian PM to make historic visit to Vietnam

HANOI - Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen will pay an official visit to Vietnam from Oct. 10-12, the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry announced Thursday. The two sides are expected to sign some documents in economy, trade, education and training, and a supplement to the border treaty inked in 1985, Le Dung, the ministry spokesman, said at a regular press briefing.

Hun Sen is scheduled to hold talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai, and meet with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nong Duc Manh and Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Van An. This will be Hun Sen's first trip to Vietnam since he took office last July, Dung said, noting that the approaching visit is made at Khai's invitation. The two-way trade between Vietnam and Cambodia stood at 400 million US dollars in the first 9 months of this year, compared with 500 million dollars in 2004 and 186 million dollars in 2001.

Cambodian leader to visit Vietnam next week

Prime Minister Hun Sen will arrive in Vietnam next week at the head of a Royal Government of Cambodia delegation. The official visit, which comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, would last from October 10 to 12, the Vietnam News Agency reported Wednesday.

The two countries have enjoyed good bilateral relations, especially in trade. Bilateral trade has been growing at an average annual rate of 30 percent in recent years, rising from US$117 million in 1998, when the two countries inked a trade agreement, to $517 million last year. In the first six months this year, it was worth $324 million, and the two neighbors are targeting $1 billion by 2010.

Vietnam now ranks fourth among buyers of Cambodian goods, after China, Thailand, and Taiwan, and seventh among exporters to the market. Vietnamese businesses have invested US$25 million in Cambodia, mainly in textile and garments, and construction materials production. Many economic zones, export processing zones, and markets have been set up in border provinces, helping improve infrastructure and boosting trade in the border areas.
