Work begins on Vietnam's largest cable-suspended bridge

HANOI - Construction of the largest cable-suspended bridge - Phu My - across the Sai Gon river started in Ho Chi Minh City on September 9. The 2,031-m bridge includes a six-lane cable-suspended section which is 705 m long and 27.5 m wide. The Phu My bridge has a clear span of 250 m and navigation clearance of 45 m.

The bridge's construction is estimated to cost US$112.8 million, $81.2 million of which will be loaned from the Societe General Bank of France, and VND400 billion provided by domestic banks. Germany's Bilfinger Berger company will work as main contractor, and Baulderstone Hornibrook of Australia, and Freyssinet International et Companie and Arcadis of France will be sub-contracted. The Phu My bridge is scheduled to be completed in the 3rd quarter of 2008 and will be open to traffic for about 100,000 vehicles per day.
