Cambodian senate approves border deal with Vietnam
The Cambodian Senate ratified Friday a supplementary treaty to the 1985 Border Demarcation Agreement signed in Hanoi last month.
With 49 of 51 votes, the supplementary treaty was approved by senators at a plenary session.
Earlier, on November 11, the Cambodian National Assembly ratified the treaty before forwarding it to the senate. The treaty now needs approval from the Constitutional Council before King Norodom Sihamoni signs it.
The Supplementary Treaty to the 1985 Border Demarcation Agreement was signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen and his Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai during the former's visit to Vietnam.
It was considered a crucial milestone in establishing a border marked by peace and friendship.
The two sides also expressed their resolve to finish land border delimitation before December 2008 in accordance with the agreement, a joint statement issued during Hun Sen’s visit stressed.
