Vietnam want to host 2014 Asiad

HANOI - Vietnamese sports authorities want to host the 2014 Asian Games, an official of the Vietnam Olympic Committee (VOC) said yesterday. The committee sent a letter on March 30 to the Kuwait-based Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) indicating interest in hosting the 17th Asiad.

A VOC official, who did not want to be named, said: “The OCA on April 1 gave Vietnam the okay to go ahead with the bid to figure on the list of candidate nations. The OCA website lists India, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates as countries whose national committees have expressed their desire to host the event.

South Korea’s southern city of Gwangju and its surrounding south Jeolla Province are also reported to be interested in bidding for the Games. Qatar will host the 2006 Asiad in Doha and the 2010 edition will be held in Guangzhou. In December 2003, Hanoi hosted the 22nd edition of the biennial SEA Games.
