UN's Annan to address bird flu in Vietnam

HANOI - Bird flu will be high on the agenda of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan when he visit Vietnam for the first time this month. "The secretary general's show of support to Vietnam and its joint programme with the UN to combat avian influenza is important as this country enters a critical phase in its fight against the virus," it said.

Vietnam has 93 reported human cases of avian flu including 42 deaths since late 2003, according to official Vietnamese figures confirmed by the World Health Organisation. No arrival date has been set but Annan is expected in Vietnam at the end of a 14-day Asian tour that starts this weekend and includes visits to China, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong.
