Vietnamese leader arrives in Cambodia
Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong arrived for a three-day state visit to Cambodia
aimed at boosting ties between the two Southeast Asian countries.
Luong was greeted by King Norodom Sihanouk and thousands of flag-waving school
children Monday before his motorcade was whisked off to a city hotel.
The Vietnamese delegation will hold high level talks with the government which will include
a protocol agreement aimed at resolving lingering border issues.
Some Cambodian nationalists still lay claim to the Mekong Delta region of southern
Vietnam, which they refer to as "lower Cambodia."
The region was only settled by ethnic Vietnamese in recent centuries and still has a Khmer
minority of nearly one million.
Luong had been expected to visit Cambodia late last year, but the trip was cancelled after
the Cambodian Freedom Fighters rebel militia launched an attack on government buildings
in Phnom Penh.
