Vietnam Airlines' revenue increases 19.2 percent
The Vietnamese national aviation company Vietnam Airlines made revenue of 659.6
million dollars in 2001, an increase of 19.2 percent over last year, an official report
said.
The figure included 24 million dollars in profit, 1.2 percent higher than the company
had planned, the official Vietnam News Agency said. It did not say how this profit
compared to that of last year.
Vietnam Airlines conducted 32,474 flights this year, a 20 percent year-on-year rise,
the agency said.
It transported 3.392 million passengers, including 1.510 million foreigners, marking a
25 percent year-on-year increase.
The airline recently opened more international air routes and signed several
code-sharing contracts with foreign partners to expand its services to destinations in
Northeast Asia, Europe and America.
This year, after receiving the first of three ATR 72-500 airplanes under a contract with
France's Avion De Transport Regional Company, the airline signed a letter of intent to
buy five Airbus A-320s from Europe's Airbus Industries.
This month it inked a contract with Boeing Corporation for the purchase of four
extended-range Boeing 777-200 planes, in a deal worth more than 400 million dollars.
After the purchase of these Boeings, Vietnam Airlines will operate nine Boeing 767s
and 777s, 12 Airbus A-320s and A-321s, seven ATR-72s and two Fokker-79s.
Most of the fleet is leased.
